State Minimums and why you should be Scared

In Kansas and Missouri, state law requires that all drivers have at least a minimum amount of auto insurance coverage in order to legally operate a motor vehicle. These minimum limits are set by the state and are designed to provide a basic level of protection in the event of an accident or other unforeseen event.

The state minimum limits for auto insurance in Kansas/Missouri are:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury liability

  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury liability

  • $25,000 per accident for property damage liability ($10,000 for Missouri)

Bodily injury liability coverage helps to pay for medical expenses and other damages if you are found to be at fault in an accident and someone else is injured. Property damage liability coverage helps to pay for damages to another person's property if you are found to be at fault in an accident.

It's important to note that these state minimum limits are just that - a minimum. They may not provide sufficient coverage for all situations, and it's a good idea to consider purchasing additional coverage in order to protect yourself and your assets.

For example, if you are involved in an accident and the damages exceed the state minimum limits, you may be held personally responsible for paying the difference out of pocket. In addition, if you have valuable assets such as a home or investments, you may want to consider purchasing higher limits or adding an umbrella policy to provide additional protection.

At Fountain City Insurance Group we will not write the state minimum limits because they are dangerously low. These laws were passed decades ago and things cost much more now.
